British Canoeing’s Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Training course is a fun and relaxed course based within a sheltered water environment, focusing on a range of simple skills and practical, effective solutions to the most common flat-water paddling issues.

This 6-8 hour course is the first of four British Canoeing safety and training courses, with the core focus on providing you with key safety and rescue skills required to operate your chosen craft safely and deal with prevalent issues you may come across within a sheltered water environment. The course gives you the opportunity to explore and implement a range of effective strategies and find solutions that should help you reach a level of independence as a member of a group within a flat-water environment.

Paddlesport Safety and Rescue is designed for paddlers of all ages, in any craft. This includes canoes, kayaks, sit-on-tops, and stand-up paddleboards. However, the British Canoeing Awarding Body requires participants to hold a Paddle Explore Award, or equivalent ability, before taking part in this course due to the environment and craft control needed to complete the course

Our courses are run in groups of up to 8, and an extended group of up to 12 participants with two instructors is common. Our providers aim to have you leave the course with a heightened understanding of up-to-date rescue techniques, improved confidence in your abilities and hopefully learning something new!

Course Content:

The Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Training programme covers 6 modules:

• Clothing and Equipment
• Safety Frameworks
• Contact and Towing Rescues
• Self Rescues
• Deep Water Rescues
• Reflection and Development

Examples of what will be covered within these modules include, but aren’t limited to:

• Appropriate equipment workshops
• Coaching a swimmer to shore
• Rescuing a swimmer with both rigid aids and the use of a throw line
• Use of improvised towlines
• Rescuing a capsized paddler 
• Emptying a variety of boats such as white water, freestyle and sea kayaks
• Rescuing an unconscious or entrapped paddler from their craft
• A variety of appropriate and realistic scenarios

What to Bring:

• Equipment suitable for sheltered water environments and cold conditions
• Appropriate footwear for uneven and wet surfaces
• Lunch for the day
