This award is new for 2019 and represents the first level on the Personal Performance Awards scheme by British Canoeing. This award provides you with the ability to apply your skills to complete a successful day on rivers of up to Grade 2, with our coaches supporting you in the understanding and use of the fundamentals in white water paddling.

Learning how to cross flows, change and maintain your direction and paddle the river with awareness of your surroundings, this award will help you develop and progress your personal paddling, with candidates able to choose from a variety of craft, including white water kayaks, OC1s and sit on tops, depending on your skill level and the environment.

Although not prerequisites, these awards provide appropriate acknowledgement of personal skills for paddlers wanting to attend coaching and leadership qualifications. Achieving these awards ahead of the relevant qualification will enable you to focus on the course content, rather than being concerned with your personal skills.

Our highly experienced coaches will get to know you and the journey that has brought you to this course, advising you with your path along British Canoeing’s qualification system, and to understanding your goals and aspirations for future paddling.

The British Canoeing White Water Award course is run in small groups of up to 4 candidates.

Course Content:

Areas covered on this course may include but aren’t limited to:

• Lifted carrying and launching
• Efficient forward paddling
• Making dynamic changes of direction
• Turning and moving sideways
• Feeling and reacting to changing water
• Preventing a capsize
• Rolling
• Using river to help manoeuvre around the river
• Appropriate rescue skills
• Safety, leadership and group skills
• Appropriate theoretical knowledge

What to Bring:

• Equipment suitable for a sheltered water environment and cold conditions
• Appropriate footwear for uneven and wet surfaces

This course will run at a number of suitable venues throughout the year, and is available upon request to groups by simply contacting us beforehand.
