Our expeditions to Montenegro are ideally suited to the grade 3 paddler who wants to meet new people, paddle new water and truly embark on an unparalleled adventure. The primary focus of this expedition is paddling the River Morača, Komarnica and Lim along with a 3-day descent of the River Tara Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. The rivers range from grade 2+ to 3+, providing both the perfect white water training ground to push your paddling in a new and dynamic environment.
We pride ourselves on proving a truly immersive and cultural experience for those who join us on our expedition, we provide all coaches and river guides, accommodation, meals and transport arrangements (excluding flights) so that after a hard day on the river you can relax, unwind and take in the breathtaking views leaving all the arrangements to us.
These expeditions are run in a small groups of 4 to 8 people where you can experience the benefits of peer learning and shared experiences, but the emphasis is still very much on you. We provide this expedition for both individual and closed group bookings, please get in touch if you are interested in doing so.

Day 1:
You and your group will be met at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) and travel from here to Herzec Novi, a Montenegrin coastal town where we’ll stop for lunch, get to know each other and be introduced to our team and the plan for the week. Being located on the sea front you’ll have a chance to go for a dip to refresh from your long travels. From here we’ll travel to a small hostel on the bank of the River Morača just outside of the country’s capital of Podgorica.
Over the course of the evening, we’ll conduct an equipment check to make sure everybody is adequately prepared for a week of paddling.
Day 2-3:
The Morača River, therefore, is a perfect warm-up and wholesome introduction to Montenegrin white water. A welcomed and refreshing river day after such extensive travel, we’ll lap two fantastic sections of the Morača, the first being a lower section from the small Hamlet of Duga, to Hostel Izvor on the outskirts of the capital Podgorica. The second is from the banks of the Morača Monastery to the confluence with the River Mrtvica. Both sections provide a mix of high-volume channels, to tight and technical boulder gardens.
Day 4-6:
Our next two days will see the group paddle the River Tara nestled at the bottom of the Tara Canyon. Truly an incredible sight and 4,300 ft at its deepest point, you’ll find a mix of fantastic high-volume rapids and tranquil calm stretches allowing you to take in the sheer magnitude of where you’ve found yourself.
Our journey down the Tara Canyon begins just up river of the Tara Bridge, a 172m grandiose feat of engineering spanning the entire canyon humbly acts as a start line to the best of the river and marks the quick progression the river will soon take in becoming a high volume grade 3. Such is the size and length of the tara river, we’ll spend a night deep in the canyon alongside the river, with shuttles bringing the group’s equipment down for the night and moving it on to the next camp in the morning.
Our second day on the River Tara is much like the first, however, the volume and power of the water begin to build at Brštanovica, a natural get-off point should you not wish to venture down the 7km of grade 3+ that awaits. Our end point is a camp a little further down from the Bosnia Herzegovina / Montenegro boarder village of Šćepan Polje.
Day 7:
Day 7 will see us paddle the River Komarnica, an astonishingly beautiful grade 2 tributary of the River Piva. Only paddled for the first time six years ago, It flows through deep winding gorges, between mountains, uninhabitable and inaccessible areas. So remote a location it features a 2km walk in consisting of a steep winding mountain track, however, the revelation upon reaching the bottom and knowing you’ll be one of very few British paddlers to ever set foot upon its banks is rather special.
Day 8:
Our final day upon the river sees the group return back to Hostel Izvor on the bank of the River Morača. Here we will paddle the grade 2/3 upper section from the Monastery down to its confluence with the River Mrtvica. A fun-packed technical section, the emphasis is to enjoy both a Montenegrin classic and a beautiful fun run to round off an incredible week of paddling.
Day 9:
All good things must come to and end, and on day 9 we say our goodbyes and head back to the airport. We aim to have you leave your time with us with some great experiences, and epic tales, buzzing to return to Montenegro in the near future.
Over the course of the expedition, there is potential to adjust the initial itinerary and run the River Lim in addition to the Morača, Tara and Komarnica. Should the group have the stamina and the will to do so, either both sections of the River Morača can be completed in a single day or the River Tara condensed into two consecutive days as opposed to three to free up time to do this.
During the summer season the air temperature is high, however, the river water can be quite fresh and we advise you to pack appropriately for these conditions.
We advise you don’t drive to Montenegro, the week involves a significant amount of travel across the country, the majority of which involves difficult-to-access regions without off-road capabilities and our schedule does not permit for traditional peer river shuttles.
During this expedition, we have a fleet of 4X4s and where appropriate a minibus for all travel logistics, therefore we encourage you to fly into Dubrovnik Airport from which we can pick you, the group and your equipment up.
For the duration of the expedition, you will use our fleet of kayaks. All our boats are both modern and river worthy with attendees receiving their choice of craft on a first come first serve basis unless any reasonable adjustments need to be made.
Kayaking equipment including paddles will need to be transported by yourselves upon your flight, however as most airlines allow sports luggage up to a certain weight to be divided across a number of bags, a whole group’s paddles can be booked in under one checked-in attendee.
We may be able to currier both your personal kayak and paddle to Montenegro, however, the timings for equipment drop off and return to the UK could be inconvenient.
It is not necessary for attendees to possess a solid white water roll, however, we do expect it to be largely ‘there’ with the attitude and will to attempt it at least twice should you capsize.
If you wish to stay for any additional days in Montenegro these will need to be arranged independently.
Lloyd Langford Expedition Training Limited provide all attendees with public liability insurance and accidental injury cover up to £5,000,000 during the course, however, the risks associated with paddlesport and outdoor activities are your own and through booking and accepting our terms and conditions you take responsibility for these risks.
